The Bluetooth LE Radio
Lesson 3 of 12

In yesterday's lesson we covered a few high-level aspects of Bluetooth LE technology. Today, we'll dig deeper into how the radio actually works.

Let's start by looking at how Bluetooth LE utilizes the 2.4 GHz band:

  • Bluetooth LE shares the 2.4 GHz band with other technologies including Bluetooth Classic, Wi-Fi, and some IEEE 802.15.4-based technologies.
  • The Bluetooth LE RF spectrum is divided into forty 2-MHz wide channels.
  • Three of these are primary advertising channels (channels 37, 38, and 39), placed to avoid the most common Wi-Fi channels.

There are three PHY configurations available in Bluetooth LE:

  • 1M PHY: 1 Mbps — mandatory for all devices
  • 2M PHY: 2 Mbps — higher throughput (v5.0+)
  • Coded PHY: 125/500 kbps — long range (v5.0+)

Your Instructor

I'm Mohammad Afaneh, author of Intro to Bluetooth Low Energy and founder of the Bluetooth Developer Academy. I've been developing Bluetooth LE products since 2014, working on everything from wearables and beacons to industrial sensors, and I've trained developers at companies like Nordic Semiconductor and Silicon Labs.

I created this crash course because I remember how overwhelming Bluetooth LE felt when I was starting out. The specification is over 3,000 pages long, and finding clear, beginner-friendly explanations was nearly impossible.

This 12-day course distills years of experience into the essentials you actually need. No jargon overload, no skipped steps — just a clear path from zero to confident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, 100% free. No credit card, no paywall. We do mention some paid resources toward the end for those who want to go deeper, but every lesson stands completely on its own.
No problem. Every lesson stays in your inbox, so you can read them at your own pace. There's no deadline.
Not at all. This course starts from the very beginning and assumes no prior Bluetooth knowledge. Basic familiarity with electronics or software development is helpful but not required.
Each lesson takes about 5 minutes to read. Short enough to fit into a coffee break, long enough to teach you something meaningful.
You'll also receive our weekly Bluetooth & UWB newsletter every Friday — industry news, tips, and tutorials in a single email. You can unsubscribe from either at any time with one click.
Even experienced developers find gaps in their foundational knowledge. This course fills those gaps with clear explanations you won't find in the spec. And since it's free, there's no risk in trying.
